![]() Getting there early can help you get your seat of choice, although there aren't really any seats without a good view. And even if you make reservations, you need to get there early and stop by the ticket booth. On our ride they also went between some of the islands that lie between the shipping channels - spots that can only be viewed by boat. So don't cancel your reservation just because it's cloudy or slightly drizzly. The captain noted that the animals are more active when the weather isn't perfect. Considering the size of the boat and the time of the cruise, that was actually pretty good. We only saw two eagles (pretty close up), 2 blue herons and lots of turtles on our trip. Our captain and first mate were very entertaining and great about taking questions. We took the Wednesday cruise out of Prairie du Chien at the peak of fall color, on a bright sunny day. I hope you find my review fair and accurate. Note: Michael mentioned that he is a guide at the Villa Louis, and it would be enjoyable to hear him speak there. I recommend that kids be of age not to distract the speaker nor impede the enjoyment of the passengers - the youngsters on our trip were well behaved but began to get a little restless towards the end of the tour.there is no 'quiet' place for them. Speakers used a sound system with good volume. The boat was new, very clean, a restroom on board, and very safe for youngsters as the boat is enclosed. You may want to bring a sweater if you sit outside if the wind is blowing. We had a great time and we want to take another of their sightseeing cruises. You may want to bring binoculars and a camera is a must as the view was spectacular. Note: patrons were welcomed to bring your own soft drinks, snacks or lunch aboard, or they sold cold bottled water for $1. All three speakers welcomed questions and kindly responded, how refreshing. Additionally, a young Naturalist was also on board and pointed out bald eagles, different species of turtles, beavers & their lodges, cranes, plant life etc., especially to the youngsters who were on board. The river boat driver (a lady whose name I am sorry I do not recall) was very knowledgeable about the river and water ways, she pointed out many interesting sights along the way. Learned the history of the Native Americans, the early explorers & settlers, from beginning to current day in a thoroughly enjoyable manner. The guide Michael Douglas (yes, his real name!) was great - I could have listened to him for the rest of the day. I brought along a paperback book to read worried that I'd be bored after the first half hour with a bad speaker. ![]() My husband and son wanted to go on a two hour history river cruise on a beautiful fall day and I was a little reluctant.
